For over six decades, Alex Katz has drawn inspiration from all types of flowers. His first series of flower paintings in the late 1960s are large close-ups of flowers in solitude or in small clusters. Like the portraits he’s known for, the flower is flat against a vast and seemingly endless backdrop. It has a commanding scale and presence, yet manages to still be intimate and mysterious.
