Since 1995, Allora & Calzadilla have developed a complex artistic vocabulary utilizing sculpture, performance and film. In their recent series, Allora & Calzadilla take electromagnetism as both subject and medium.
To make the large-scale Electromagnetic Paintings, the artists drop iron filings on top of a canvas and placed it above an array of copper cables connected to an electrical breaker in the artists' studio in San Juan, which gets its power from the indebted Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority.
When the breaker is turned on, the electrical current causes the iron particles to self-organize into a composition of lines and shapes governed by the vast electromagnetic field.
Allora & Calzadilla's unique process creates an alternative interpretive frame to consider the intersections and opacities of energy production.
