Known for the multidisciplinary nature of his practice, Andro Wekua (b. 1977, Sochumi, Georgia) blurs the line between objective and subjective interpretation. Creating imagery that recalls a personal yet undefined history, Wekua’s work often appears to us as emotionally familiar, despite that the artist consciously disavows the formal tropes of narrative. In Wings (2019), this peculiar feeling of proximity to emotion is amplified by such allegorical forms of a suspended window and disembodied wings. The use of silver leafing allows light to pool on the surface of the painting and expand its enigmatic interiority.
