“For the Kathmandu Triennale in 2017, Bosmans developed new works that were exhibited at the Palace Museum of Patan in Nepal, which presents and preserves antique Newari sculptures confiscated by the Nepalese customs service. The sculptures in the museum’s collection cannot, in fact, be put back in their original spots, since there is too great a risk that they wouldbe stolen again and sold to Westerners. Themuseum was established in order to counter such theft.
Because animals so frequently appear as ‘beasts of burden’ in medieval art, Bosmans visualized an inventory of such animals within the collection of confiscated objects at the Palace Museum of Patan, seen here in “Mount and Means of Transport”. Listing the Nepalese and English names of each animal and the number of times he encountered them, Bosmans used the same design as the museum’s wall labels for this work.”
