Richard Aldrich’s (b. 1975, Hampton, VA) work frequently proceeds from the imposition of creative constraints, including the decision to limit his palette to a few signature colors, using each to block out a particular area of canvas. In Untitled, 2018-2019, these discrete zones of color serve to suggest figurative possibilities, surrounded by a storm of gestural, impasto brushmarks. The lyrical, expressive passages serve to underscore how even abstract works are vessels of personal meaning and recollection for the artist.
