Over the decades of his long career, Belgian painter Walter Swennen (b. 1946, Brussels) has been perennially fascinated by the painterly possibilities of language, popular culture, and everyday objects. Built of varied layers of different techniques and textures, the surface of Street View (2019) divulges how Swennen composes the painting, while the space it depicts remains peculiar and undeniably alluring. With no clues to the scene's time or place, the artist leaves the viewer to decipher the work's mise-en-scène and imagine what action may have taken place there, or may happen in the future.
