One of the visually recurring birds in Bosmans’ work is the crane, replete with its historical and mythical connotations. The crane has been a symbol for vigilance ever since Pliny the Elder wrote that the bird holds a stone in its talons when standing on guard. Legend has it that when the crane falls asleep, it drops the stone and wakes itself up. Bosmans retrieved the stone in ‘Vigilance’ from a crane’s cage at a Belgian zoo, suspending this symbol for awareness in midair in perpetuity.
